Bonding with your child is critical for emotional wellbeing and overall healthy development throughout your child’s life. Parents need to foster an environment which is safe, trustworthy, dependable and loving.
Don’t dismiss your children’s feelings (for example: “deal with it” or “toughen up!”), thinking that this will make your children more resilient. This will only make your children feel like there is no safe space for them to open up – it teaches them not to trust their own feelings. It leaves them feeling like something is wrong with them, like they shouldn’t be feeling the way they do.
Acknowledge and validate your children’s experiences as you help them work through a difficult situation. This will help them grow and take risks while nurturing healthy relationships.
